2013: A GTWT Year in Review

As we begin a new year here at GTWT with excitement and determination, we reflect upon 2013 and the many accomplishments made in our community.

February 2013
We visited Loyola Marymount University, USC, and Mount St. Mary's College where the girls met current students, professors, and were inspired to learn about opportunities in higher education.

March 2013
GTWT and Eileen Fisher partnered for their Spring Shopping Event and raised over $12,000 to support GTWT programming and operations!

April 2013
Our very own Cristina Romero (GTWT participant and Roosevelt High School alum) was awarded the prestigious Gates Millennium Scholarship, a four year, comprehensive scholarship which covers all of her college expenses and can continue through her Master's Degree! She just completed her first semester at UC Santa Barbara and plans to become a surgeon.

May 2013
GTWT girls bravely pursued study abroad opportunities on several continents! Aurora Varela studied Aerospace Engineering in Puerto Rico, Stephanie Vega spent her summer in China, and Jaclyn Fuerte is spending her senior year of high school in Germany, having won the Congress-Bundestag Youth Exchange Scholarship.

June 2013
All 13 of our high school seniors graduated and enrolled in college! We have girls studying at UC San Diego, UCLA, Mount St. Mary's College, and UC Santa Barbara to name a few.

September 2013
15 GTWT Alumni proved their strength as they ran alongside 100 Grifols employees, completing a 5k Gladiator Mud Run. Grifols employees raised over $10,000 for GTWT at this event!

October 2013
Our 13th Annual Fashion Show Luncheon was a huge success! Guests were inspired by our keynote speaker, Monica Gil of Nielsen, as well as our Distinguished Graduate, Dahiana Jacobo. The girls wowed the audience with their confidence on stage and their beautiful dresses, donated by Stop Staring! and Byer California. Thank you to our Title Sponsor, Grifols, for making this event such a success!

November 2013
GTWT was chosed by Aio Wireless to receive ten $1,000 scholarships for our outstanding seniors. The girls and their families attended an awards ceremony at the Grammy Museum and were surprised with a gift of tablet computers!

December 2013
GTWT was one of 18 organizations nationwide to win the Perlman Foundation's Bridging the Gap Award. With your help, we raised over $10,000 in three weeks, for a total of more than $21,000 after a match from the Perlman Foundation! Thank you for helping us end the year on such a positive note!
